Sleep – For Some It Is An Undiscovered Country

Sleep – For Some It Is An Undiscovered Country

TIRED COUNTRY Sleep disorders are a group of conditions that affect the ability to sleep well on a regular basis. Whether they are caused by a health problem or by too much stress, sleep disorders are becoming increasingly common in the United States. In fact, more than 75 percent of Americans between ages 20 and 59 report having sleeping difficulties regularly. The American Sleep Association estimates that 50-70 million US adults have a sleep disorder.  Short sleep duration is thought to be responsible for 3-5% of obese adults and drowsy driving is responsible for 1,550 fatalities. Most people occasionally experience sleeping problems due to stress, hectic schedules, and other outside influences. However, when these issues begin to occur on a regular basis and interfere with daily life, they may indicate a sleeping disorder.     CAUSES Allergies and Respiratory Problems Allergies, colds, and upper respiratory infections can make it challenging to breathe at night. The inability to breathe through your nose can also cause sleeping difficulties.   Nocturia Nocturia, or frequent urination, may disrupt your sleep by causing you to wake up during the night. Hormonal imbalances and diseases of the urinary tract may contribute to the development of this condition.   Stress and Anxiety Stress and anxiety often have a negative impact on sleep quality. It can be difficult for you to fall asleep or to stay asleep. Nightmares, sleep talking, or sleepwalking may also disrupt your sleep.   Chronic Pain Constant pain can make it difficult to fall asleep. It might even wake you up after you fall asleep. Some of the most common causes of chronic pain include: arthritis chronic fatigue syndrome fibromyalgia...
Lavender Essential Oil: Versatile, Diverse, Essential

Lavender Essential Oil: Versatile, Diverse, Essential

“Lavender: the glory of aromatherapy, a mother queen to pacify and console, a cooling tonic relaxer and rescue remedy, a panacea of amazing amplitude, a multiple healer for the heart, the lungs, the digestive tract, a bestower of tranquility and peace…..” Dr. Malte Hozzel Versatile The amazing Lavender is one of the most versatile of essential oils. It sometimes seems as if there is nothing that Lavender can’t do! Lavender lifts you up when you are tired; it settles you down when you are anxious; it aids sleep; it relaxes the muscles; when used in a massage blend it balances and emphasizes the notes in other oils; it uplifts you when you are feeling down, and it soothes the skin. Added to all of this, True Lavender (Lavendula Angustifolia) is one of the safest essential oils, and one that you can put on the skin undiluted; always test patch first to make sure there isn’t a reaction. In fact, modern aromatherapy really began when Maurice Gattefosse, a French chemist, used pure Lavender oil on his burned hands after a laboratory explosion and noticed exceptionally quick and complete healing. There are many different species of lavender which produce variable essential oils that have very different constituents, qualities, and uses. Since we are Aromatherapist or lay people rather than academic botanists or gardeners let’s concern ourselves with those varieties that produce readily available essential oils: True lavender, Spike Lavender, Lavender Stoechas and Lavandin. Let’s Walk the Garden There are so many different types of Lavender to help with so many types of concerns, it can get confusing. To help you through...
Arthritis Pain A Case Study

Arthritis Pain A Case Study

Arthritis is a common inflammatory condition that causes pain and swelling in the joints.  I am often asked about essential oils that may help ease the pain.  Following is a case study of a client I saw recently.   Client  A woman, aged 51 years came seeking an alternative to painkillers to help reduce the pain from arthritis in her right shoulder and neck, which also seemed to move to the left on occasion. She is in good general health. Her M.D. had diagnosed her with the beginning of Osteoarthritis and wanted to prescribe her something for the pain, she isn’t keen on this being her first route so she is seeking the aid of some other Practitioners. She is a petite framed woman and possesses a very positive and outgoing character. She attempts to remain active. Most of the pain is experienced in bed at night when finding a comfortable position is challenging. In the morning, stiffness and pain are experienced in both rising and walking. Plan The client seemed open to adding massage therapy to her plan, I gave her several referrals to therapists who are trained in using Clinical aromatherapy and incorporate it into their massage practice. We smelled many oils that I felt would be beneficial and together we narrowed the selection to the following: Plai (Zingiber cassumunar): The anti-inflammatory potential of Plai is most significant, the Thai Institute have demonstrated that components of Plai are twice as potent as Diclofenac (Voltarol), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Black Pepper (Piper nigrum): It has wonderful analgesic and warming properties. Cantele (2014) cites it as one of the most...
